My Fathers Legacy

(In honor of your 65th revolution of the sun)

A curious girl, With braids all askew,
I looked up with wide eyes, At the father I knew.

You may not have known it then, But I thought you hung the moon,
The days they flew by, It seemed I grew up too soon.

Those Saturday mornings, When we would hang out,
Were the best days to me, By far; without a doubt.

The things that you taught me, Those wonderful days,
I’ve used all my life, In so many ways.

Then as I grew older, You helped me along,
Sorted me out, The times I did wrong.

“Dad, I’m going to college”, You said, “Well have fun”,
But when I called you in trouble, You’d come on the run.

I did not always show it, But of you I was proud,
My father, The man who stood on the clouds.

Then as a young woman, I struggled to grow,
Again you were there, The great man I now know.

You lifted me up, Whenever I fell,
You gave me the strength, To be proud , And live well.

On the day of my wedding, When we walked down the aisle,
Once again I was the child in braids, And I smiled.

Dad I want you to know, The stories I most cherish now,
Are the ones that begin with,

“My dad taught me how”.

For the dreams, And the lessons, Closest to my heart,
Are all the ones In which you were a part.

There are not many others, Who can proudly say,
I know how to do this, Because my dad, Showed me the way.

I love you, my father, my friend!
